What is a low-complexity treatment?
When we talk about low-complexity treatments in assisted reproduction, we are referring to simpler methods that do not involve the manipulation of eggs, sperm, or embryos in a laboratory, as happens in high-complexity treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Timed Intercourse: Synchronizing ovulation with sexual intercourse
Timed intercourse is one of the first treatment options we recommend for couples with certain specific conditions. It consists of synchronizing the woman's ovulation with the moment of sexual intercourse, maximizing the chances of fertilization.
How does timed intercourse work?
Timed intercourse is a simple and effective way to control the exact moment of ovulation in order to schedule sexual intercourse during the most fertile days.
Who can benefit?
This treatment is indicated for couples in which the woman has healthy fallopian tubes and the man has semen with good sperm concentration and motility.
Ovulation induction or monitoring: In some cases, we use ovulation-inducing medications to stimulate ovulation. In others, we simply monitor natural ovulation through serial ultrasounds.
Personalized guidance: when the follicle As the cycle approaches, we advise couples to have sexual intercourse on their most fertile days, generally in the 24-48 hours leading up to ovulation.
“"Timed intercourse is a simple strategy that fits into a couple's routine, offering good chances of success, especially for women who need a little help to ovulate."”
Advantages of Scheduled Intercourse
Low cost and minimal invasiveness: Since sexual intercourse takes place at home, the treatment is minimally invasive and low-cost.
First line of approach: This is generally the first approach suggested for women who have irregular ovulation.
Intrauterine insemination: a small step towards big results.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is another low-complexity treatment, but with minimal laboratory intervention. In this process, the partner's semen is prepared and injected directly into the woman's uterus, facilitating the meeting between sperm and egg.
How does intrauterine insemination work?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is indicated for couples who have minor alterations in sperm quality or difficulties related to ovulation. It can also be applied to female same-sex couples, using donor sperm.
Semen preparation: Semen is collected and prepared in a laboratory, where the healthiest and most motile sperm are selected.
Application to the uterus: The prepared semen is introduced directly into the woman's uterus using a very thin catheter, which reduces the distance the sperm need to travel to reach the egg.
“"Intrauterine insemination is an option for couples who need a little boost to increase their chances of pregnancy."”
Who can benefit from intrauterine insemination?
- Women with healthy, functioning fallopian tubes.
- Men with minor semen abnormalities, such as reduced sperm concentration or motility.
- Couples who have already tried timed intercourse without success, but who do not yet need to resort to more complex treatments.
- Female same-sex couples.
Advantages of Intrauterine Insemination
Minor procedure without anesthesia: The procedure is simple, performed in the doctor's office, and does not require anesthesia.
Semen preparation: Laboratory processing of semen improves sample quality, which can enhance the chances of success for couples with mild sperm abnormalities.
Timed intercourse vs. intrauterine insemination: Which is best?
The choice between these two treatments will depend on several factors, such as the health of the fallopian tubes, sperm quality, and response to ovulation induction. Both are first-line treatments for many couples, especially those who are at the beginning of their assisted reproduction journey.
When should you seek a specialist?
If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for more than a year, or more than six months in the case of women over 35, it is important to consider an evaluation with a human reproduction specialist. For women over 35, six months of unsuccessful attempts already warrant investigation. Based on the tests and the couple's history, we can identify the best treatment approach for each case.
Both timed intercourse and intrauterine insemination are effective and accessible treatments that can yield great results for couples facing mild difficulties conceiving. Most importantly, when correctly indicated, these options offer a chance of success without the need for more invasive treatments.
